5/25/05 - The Gaylord JV softball team completed its season on Thursday 5/24 with a split of a doubleheader against Alpena winning the first game 7-0 and losing the second 2-1. The Lady Blue Devils compiled an impressive 18-8 record along with a tournament championship in 2007.

The week of May 21 started with a split against the TC West JV followed by a doubleheader sweep of SSM on Tuesday and culminated with the split against Alpena.

For the season many players stood out:

Freshman Liz Bauman: Pitching 17-5 record with 195 strikeouts in 116 innings ( 1.68 ave / inning ) 36 earned runs ( .31 ERA ) only 20 walks, 4 wild pitches and 3 hit batters. At the plate Bauman led the team with a .600 batting average, 22 RBI, 13 walks and only one strike out. Her slugging % was .769

Collectively the team averaged 9.8 hits per game and 8.2 runs per game.

At the beginning of the season Coach Krepps expressed to the players and parents her desire to help rebuild the softball program in the Gaylord community and at Gaylord high school and to prepare the players for the varsity level. Team effort was needed in order to be successful and by season's end the JV Lady Blue Devils accomplished that. A never-say-die attitude resulted in many come-from-behind victories. Great pitching and aggressive hitting complemented an ever improving defense. Coach Krepps has encouraged the players to continue developing their softball skills by playing summer softball at either the little league level or with travel teams and to attend college camps.

The entire JV coaching staff, Coach Haydee Krepps, Assistant coaches Tony Krepps and Brent Holmes, want to thank the parents, players and Gaylord High School for the opportunity to have represented the Gaylord community and athletic department during the 2007 softball season.

5/17/07 - Ali Minor had another great game defensively.  Morgan Cornelius switched defensive positions and played outstanding.  The defense was once again led by Rebecca (Worm) Saldana.

On Friday the Lady Blue Devils played a very good Ogemaw Heights team. Freshman pitcher Liz Bauman went toe-to-toe with her counterpart as each pitcher struck out 11 batters in game one. Timely hitting by Ogemaw Heights and several miscues by Gaylord allowed the visitors to win game one. In game two, freshman Katie Kempfer took to the mound and pitched well allowing five hits and three runs in three innings and struck out two and kept the game close. Gaylord managed only six hits and two runs in game two. The final score was 5-2.

For the week several players distinguished themselves: On the mound Liz Bauman won six games and lost one striking out 54 batters and walking 8 in eight games.

Bauman won both games striking out 13 batters in game one and 3 in game two. Her teammates pounded out 17 hits in the first game and 10 hits in the second game. Bauman was a perfect 5 for 5 batting with a double and two RBIs. Sophomore Jordan Kroll continued to rip the ball as she went 3 for 4 with a double and two RBIs. Sophomore SS Sarah Salyer drove in two runs also on a 3 for 4 hitting spree. Trailing 4-2 in the third inning Gaylord scored four runs on five consecutive hits along with two walks to take the lead. In the fifth inning Gaylord once again batted around to score three additional runs and seal the victory.

Game two was filled with excitement and emotion. Trailing 5 to 1 to Petoskey, who found their hitting against Bauman, Gaylord rallied to score five runs in their last at bat to shock  Petoskey and make believers out of the young Blue Devil team. Consecutive singles by freshmen Katie Kempfer, Brittney Lenoir and Tabetha Combs loaded the bases. Sophomore Brooke Newberry fouled off numerous pitches after she fell behind in the count and drew a walk to score Kempfer. Sarah Salyer also drew a RBI walk scoring Emma Charbonneau, who was pinch running for Lenoir. And then freshman Gabby Hoffman delivered the big hit with a two run Texas league single to left field to score Combs and Newberry and tie the game. Sophomore Breanna Lenoir then hit a single to left field for the winning run as pinch runner Samantha Courier blazed across the plate.

The Gaylord JV team is now 5-3 on the season and 4-0 for the week as they continue play Thursday at Boyne City and Friday at home against Ogemaw Heights. During the post game meeting, Head Coach Haydee Krepps congratulated the players on their victory and never say die effort. "Your trust in your teammates and coaches produced the win. Get involved! Become a Booster.

We have some ongoing needs to help preserve our athletic programs.  Please note that the Booster Club gave over $45,000 last year to help fund athletics.  This fall, in keeping with that effort, we have already donated $2,000 to girls' swimming, $500 to 5 teams who helped with our concession stand, $10/athlete for all fall teams, and made a contribution to our varsity cross country team making it to the state finals - and the school year has a long way to go.

We appreciate your commitment to Gaylord Athletics and hope you will consider joining us in making our programs the best in northern Michigan.

Go Blue Devils!
